LUCKY KGATLE

FOUNDER & CEO

Lucky Kgatle, a distinguished leader in the mining industry, brings over two decades of extensive operational, strategic, and leadership experience to his role as the driving force behind Tlou Holdings. His career is marked by significant achievements that have consistently set new benchmarks in the industry.

As the former Senior Vice President at Sasol Mining, Lucky was responsible for overseeing large-scale operations that produced approximately 40 million tonnes of thermal coal annually. He managed a workforce of over 13,000 employees, demonstrating his exceptional capability in leading complex and expansive operations. Under his guidance, Sasol Mining not only maintained high levels of productivity but also achieved new standards in safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Lucky’s leadership extended well beyond operational management. He served on the boards of five Sasol-related companies. His strategic insight and governance expertise were further recognised through his representation of Sasol Mining at the Minerals Council of South Africa, where he played a pivotal role in industry discussions and decision-making.

One of Lucky’s most notable accomplishments was leading a R3.2 billion business transformation programme at Sasol Mining. This initiative was not just about improving numbers; it focused on creating a more efficient and adaptive mining operation. The transformation programme resulted in a productivity increase of more than 11%, with projections indicating a further improvement of at least 27% in the cost base upon its completion. Additionally, under Lucky’s leadership, cost-saving models were developed that delivered R150 million in savings in underground services and operating materials.

Lucky’s career is also marked by his resilience in the face of significant challenges. He successfully navigated the complexities of managing operations during the Covid-19 pandemic and handled major labour disruptions, including the notable strike in 2016, ensuring minimal disruption to the company’s operations.

His academic credentials are equally impressive. Lucky holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand, an Executive Development Program accreditation from Sasol/GIBS, and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). This strong educational foundation, combined with his extensive hands-on experience, gives him a unique ability to address complex challenges and implement innovative solutions across various sectors.

Today, under Lucky Kgatle’s visionary leadership, Tlou Holdings stands as a testament to his forward-thinking approach to the mining and investment sectors. The company focuses on sectors crucial for African development, including mining, energy, infrastructure, and agriculture.
